What to expect on your first session
When you first arrive you will be given some paperwork to fill out. This will include a notice about confidentiality, consent forms, and policy’s about deposits, late cancellations and privacy and consent information. These will take you 10-15 minutes to complete.
Your first session is an opportunity for me to get to know you better, including your current concerns, history, resources and goals for therapy. It allows you to see if you are comfortable with the fit between us. Sometimes people have difficulty knowing where to start, but I will support you through the process and make this first session as comfortable as possible. You are not required to have all the answers.
In the last few minutes of the session, we will summarise what we have discussed and will formulate a treatment plan- an outline of what the central issues are, what type of therapy might be useful and how long the therapy may take.
After the session it is helpful for you to think about how you felt? Did you feel comfortable about being open and honest? Were their things you forgot to share? Perhaps you may want to jot these things down and bring them with you to your next session.
If the session went well that is great, if not, you are not stuck in this therapy! Hopefully, there is a good fit from the start, if not speak to your GP who can advise you on someone else that might be a better match. Remember this is about you and getting the help you need.
